The course continues to build on many areas of mathematics covered in GCSE. There is a large focus on algebra skills as well as an increased emphasis on problem solving. The course expands statistical concepts introduced at GCSE and introduces new areas of statistical analysis. Mechanics is a new area of maths introduced at A Level, exploring forces and the motion of moving bodies.

Pure (algebra based) topics include:

  • Proof
  • Algebra and functions
  • Coordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane
  • Sequences and series
  • Trigonometry
  • Exponentials and logarithms
  • Differentiation
  • Integration
  • Numerical methods

Skills Developed and Career Prospects

Mathematics is well-respected by many employers and is an excellent subject for entry into higher education.

Mathematics combines well with a range of A Level courses, particularly Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Economics. It also complements the study of Product Engineering and Psychology.

Students that have studied Mathematics are in a fortunate position of having a fantastic choice of career. This course leads directly into the Sciences, Engineering, Computer Sciences and, of course, Mathematics degrees.
