Starting High Storrs – a Y7 perspective

This latest blog has been written by two Y7 students reflecting on their first day and week at High Storrs School

Starting at High Storrs by Sandy

Following transition day and summer school, a new chapter of my life was about to unfold …

Day 1

On the 5th September, I prepared myself for the next 6 years of my life as I started High Storrs school.  I walked through those gates with so much going on in my head and with trepidation, I began to walk up to my form room.  When I arrived my form teacher was very welcoming, as was everyone else in my form.  Then we began doing form activities. Halfway through the morning  it was breaktime and I proceeded to LF3 where I met some of my friends from primary school.  After break, all the year 7s went to the main cafeteria to get their ‘biometrics’ taken (a finger print for making payments for food).  Then it was back to form time for the rest of the period.  Next  it was lunch and I found my friends on the field where we played football.  I then realised I needed to prepare for my first lesson; maths!  Luckily it went well and I was pleasantly surprised it was rather straightforward.

The final lesson of my first day was English, during which my teacher Mr Caldwell told us we were going to be studying the Iliad for the first term which was a nice surprise because I really enjoy history.  Then it was the end of the day, which meant I had to find my way through the hordes of people funnelling out through the doors and find my friends to walk home.

The rest of my first week

From the start to the end of my first week, I had to learn a lot very quickly.  Many things about High Storrs have their ‘fans and haters’! For example the one-way systems, some people like it as is reduces congestion in the corridors whereas others dislike it as you might have to go all the way around the school to get to your next lesson.  The best lessons included DT with Mr Vickers where we are making toy cars and PE where we are playing football which is really fun.

Finally, after a very enjoyable art lesson, it hit me that my first week was over; it had flown by.  For the first time in my life, I had multiple pieces of homework!  My first week had taught me that secondary school was only going to get bigger, better and crazier.

The first day at High Storrs by Lily

As I walked through the gate my legs trembled with fear.  Was I going to make friends?  I walked past looking at everyone in the eye.  The height difference between me compared to everyone else made me quiver.  This feeling was unlike any I had experienced before.

My first class that very Monday was form.  I was nervous to walk in those doors but I clutched onto my bag and walked in with my head high.  It was only seconds after I started feeling like I had been here my whole life.  Every now and then me and my friends would look at each other and grin.  By the end of the day, I had already made a large group of friends.

Now that I look back at that day I realise how fortunate I am to even have the opportunity to be at High Storrs.  My journey on forward will be even more ecstatic!
