New Staff Blogs – September 2022

In this next High Storrs Blog we have a brief introduction from each of our new recruits.  They have each shared a little of their history and a few nuggets of other information.  We have been so pleased to welcome such a talented group of people to join our High Storrs staff.

Will Cafferky

Hello everyone! I’m joining High Storrs as a History Teacher. I graduated last year with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the University of Sheffield, spending time on placements at a variety of schools across the city. I also completed an MA in Global History in 2021, focussed on the history of slavery.  I’ve always loved working with young people and communities, having spent time with various football clubs and homework clubs, as well as working as a social researcher. I genuinely can’t wait to channel all my experiences so far into helping young people at High Storrs discover a diverse range of fabulous histories.

Away from all that I love playing and watching sport, particularly basketball and football, and try to make time when I can to eat good food, read good books, listen to good music, and watch good films and I am always on the lookout for recommendations regarding any of the above!

Tom Highnett

I will be joining High Storrs as an Assistant Head leading on KS4 (Y9, 10 and 11) learning and progress. Having entered the teaching profession in September 2013 as part of the Teach First charity, I have had a varied career so far. I started my career as a teacher of Geography at a school in Scunthorpe where I progressed to become the head of the Humanities department. From there, I moved onto a large academy in Wakefield as their Head of Geography, before being appointed as Assistant Principal and director of Post-16 (Y12 and 13). Amidst my varied leadership roles, I have always remained an avid lover of my subject – Geography – and remain a dedicated and reflective classroom teacher.

I am very proud to be joining such a historic and proud institution of Sheffield and will endeavour to deliver my absolute best every day for the community of High Storrs School. I am a deep believer in the transformative power of education and feel even more passionately about the work of schools and teachers, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

I look forward to meeting and working with wonderful members of the High Storrs School community in the coming year and beyond.

Lauren Murray

I’ll be teaching English from September. I’ve just finished my teacher training at the University of Nottingham, and I’m looking forward to moving up to Sheffield and being closer to the Peaks! I’m also really excited to meet all my new classes and to share with them my passion for literature and creative expression. I love reading in all its forms, from Gothic literature to audiobooks and graphic novels, and I hope to help inspire the students of High Storrs to feel the same way. Other interests of mine include philosophy, film and creative writing.

Before my training year I spent a lot of time tutoring, which showed me how important it is to get to know everyone as individuals. I’ve also just spent a month teaching students from abroad, which has taught me a lot about communication and expression! I’m sure High Storrs will bring its own set of lessons and I can’t wait to get immersed in this wonderful community.

Louise Heaton

Hello – I can’t wait to join HSS in September 2022 as a teacher of Biology.  My teaching career began 8 years ago, in higher education, where I taught undergraduates in the department of Animal and Plant Sciences at the University of Sheffield. Wanting to inspire younger minds and be part of a wider school community, I made the switch to secondary school teaching, completing my PGDE last year at the University of Sheffield.  Since then, I have been teaching within the science department at Tapton School.

I bring a wealth of skills and experience to HSS including first-hand experience of research (on blood-sucking bedbugs) and conservation (of the much cuter chinchillas).  I am looking forward to drawing on these experiences to challenge my students in new and interesting ways.

Lorena Levy

I am the new Assistant Headteacher - Director of Key Stage 3. I am also a Spanish and French teacher and I have been teaching in schools in Sheffield for over ten years.

I am joining High Storrs School from Handsworth Grange Community Sports College, where I worked as the Head of Languages and the whole school intervention coordinator, with a focus on supporting the attainment of vulnerable students. Before my time at Handsworth, I worked at King Edward VII School as the Head of KS3 Languages.

I hold a strong belief in the power of education to change children’s lives and the right of every child to receive an excellent education. One of my main passions is supporting all students, in particular disadvantaged pupils, to ensure every pupil maximises their full potential thus improving their life chances in the future.

I am delighted and honoured to be appointed the new Director of Key Stage 3 and I cannot wait to get started. I am looking forward to getting to know the students, families, and staff at High Storrs School.

Amy Mason

Hello everyone. Some of you may already know me from my previous role as a teaching assistant but, after returning to university in order to progress my career in education, I am now the new teacher of PSHCEE.

I have worked at High Storrs as a teaching assistant for 6 years and during this time, I have become passionate about empowering and supporting our students. I believe that PSHCEE education plays a fundamental part in equipping young people with the knowledge, skills and attitude needed to be successful and confident members of society.

I am so excited to be able to take on the next chapter of my career at High Storrs and make a positive contribution to the lives of our students through their PSHCEE lessons.

Luke Wakeman

After spending a few months at High Storrs last year for my PGCE training, I’ve now returned to a full-time position in the wonderful Religion, Philosophy, and Ethics department! I’m from Lincolnshire originally but moved here 5 years ago for my undergraduate degree in East Asian Studies from the University of Sheffield. I took a lot of philosophy and religion modules at university and absolutely loved them, so I wanted to get into teaching to share that love of the subject with as many people as I could.

Outside the classroom I spend lots of time in my kitchen, cooking and baking as many breads and pastries I can think of, but I also love getting out to the Peak District on my bike. High Storrs is a great place to be working, especially for my first teaching job, and I’m looking forward to spending time getting to know the students and staff alike.

Liliane Sindayigaya

I am a Biology Technician. After graduating in Pharmaceutical Sciences, I worked in various NHS laboratories but decided to move into the education sector 6 years ago. Partly because, I am passionate about sciences and being a school science tech allows me to channel that passion through preparing fun practical. In addition, I enjoy the long summer breaks!

I have been at High Storrs since September 2017 and have really loved working in the Science Department. Like the prodigal son, I am back after a yearlong stint in London. I am looking forward to being part of the High Storrs family again. Like Dorothy said “There’s no place like home”

Nina Parkin

I've been teaching since 2016. I teach Design and Technology, Food and Engineering. I was at Handsworth Grange Community College since I started my career in teaching until July this year. I decided to go part time to have a bit more of a balance while my children are young and being able to do that at a school with an amazing reputation was too good to miss.

Whilst at High Storrs I am looking forward to learning new strategies through the school professional development programmes and to be able to learn new skills to enhance my subject knowledge.

Richard Foxton

I am excited to be joining the Maths department at High Storrs. I've been a teacher for 15 years at one school so getting used to a new school is a big challenge. But one that I am relishing. I enjoy teaching students of all ages and strengths and ensuring they achieve their best, particularly when it comes to those crucial exam years.

Brett Harrison

Having moved from subject leader of economics at my previous school in Doncaster, it is my absolute pleasure to be back in my hometown of Sheffield at this incredible school, High Storrs. I have called Sheffield my home ever since moving here from Cheshire in 2002 for my studies (I’m showing my age now!). I spent four years in industry before making the truly fulfilling leap into teaching and I have never looked back; I am extremely proud to work in such a rewarding profession. There has never been a better time to study economics and business than the last couple of years! I pride myself in bringing as many ‘real life’ examples to our young learners as possible.

Outside the classroom, I used to enjoy playing the guitar in a band, occasionally doing the odd gig or two, and writing songs. Since hanging up my guitar, I have switched to spending my time playing squash and taking time to enjoy the local scenery on long walks with the puppies – although I’m sure they take me for walks me at times!

Stewart Deering

Originally from Northern Ireland I came to Sheffield for University in 2005 and apart from a brief blip living in London I've never wanted to leave! I thoroughly enjoyed working as a Science Teacher and Physics Co-ordinator at Trinity Academy in Doncaster for a number of years. I then decided to take a break to train for and work in local church and parish ministry.

Returning to teaching in January this year I worked as supply in a number of schools across Sheffield. I was delighted to be given a long-term placement in the Science department at High Storrs and I'm very much looking forward to joining the team fully as Chemistry Teacher for the coming year.

Gemma Notice

Enthusiastic Mathematics teacher with 12 years’ experience moving from a school in Doncaster! I am excited to have made the move across to Sheffield and to be teaching at High Storrs. I always enjoy the opportunity to develop my knowledge and practice, and feel High Storrs is the right place to do this. I believe that I will bring charisma and dedication to the role. I am really looking forward joining High Storrs and getting to know you all.

Shabana Bibi

Hi Everyone - I am a Teacher of Science.

As a student, I came to High Storrs, so coming back here so many years later, as an adult feels a bit surreal. Most of the main building is just the way it was but the staff room is where we used to have textiles lessons and business studies was one or two doors down from there.  The legendary Mr Akram was also lucky enough to teach me Urdu!

I started my teaching career as an unqualified IT teacher, went to to do my PGCE Science, then got an offer from the same school to teach IT, I took it and I loved it.  But I was passionate about teaching Science and so I took the plunge. Since then I have worked in in various schools in Sheffield, Barnsley, Bradford and Leeds. I have done various roles including teacher of Science in a school with boys who have BESD, Lead Inclusion in Science, Deputy Director of Science and Director of Science.

You must be thinking the same question some students have asked me

“How long have you been around Miss?” The answer is forever and most of that forever, I have been Teaching.

Scott Wheatley

Hi! Although I am not new, I do have a new role this year working within our fantastic sixth form teaching all 3 strands of the student support hour. I am really looking forward to this new challenge. I am a firm believer in developing the whole child and this position really allows for this. I want our students to feel confident leaving our gates and that they are best prepared for any hurdle life may throw at them.

High Storrs is a great school with excellent students and staff, and I am very pleased to be staying here in a new role.

Nicole Smith

My role is teacher of Psychology. I have just finished my PGCE at Ashton Sixth Form predominantly teaching A-Level Psychology and Access to Higher Education on the Psychology unit. I have really enjoyed teaching so far and have been looking forward to having my own classes. I am really looking forward to having my ECT year at High Storrs - everyone seems so supportive.
