Why elf day?

Cara Diskin, PE Teacher and Chief Elf

We're busy preparing for Elf Day on Friday 8th December to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society. Chief Elf Diskin has taken the time to tell us more about why this charity and event are so important to her.

About 18 months ago we received the devastating news that my dad had been diagnosed with dementia. This hit both me and my family hard. We also had so many questions; What is dementia, How will it affect us all, - but mainly, How will this affect my dad?

Seeing a once “normal person” change in so many ways from this debilitating illness is an emotional journey. After my own experiences I began to think what I could do to help and make a difference to all those affected by this devastating disease, raise awareness of Alzheimer's and Dementia, and give something back those who had supported, and will continue to support, me and my family.

In the end I decided to start fundraising for The Alzheimer's Society, an amazing charity designed to support and fund those affected by Dementia. Monies they collect funds research into this illness to find a cure.

So far I have completed two memory walks, one in Liverpool and another in Leeds, where I joined hundreds of other walkers in support of a world without Dementia. I've raised over £500 so far, and would like to thank the staff at High Storrs who were so generous and supportive in this.

I recently read about The Alzheimer's Society's 'Elf Day', a national event to raise awareness and fundraise. I thought this was the perfect opportunity to bring to High Storrs. 'Elf Day' is Friday 8th December, so eases us into the festive season and allows us to have a bit of fun.

Students and staff at High Storrs are fantastic and enthusiastic fundraisers, so I am sure this this be a really fun and successful day. We will be encouraging everyone to dress and an Elf, join us for the lunchtime Elf Disco (with Santa promising to stop by too!) buy a Elf cake or bun, make and Elf mask an bunting and join in the Elf quiz - all whilst learning about and supporting those suffering with Dementia.

As I'm a PE teacher, you should also watch out for Elf type physical activities; the Elf wars (tug-of-war), Elf dash (run) and possibly Elf Olympics.

Elf day is on Friday 8th December. Please dig deep and make sure you bring in lots of spare change. Get ready to unleash your inner elf to play ! #elfday
