Our new recruits

In this next High Storrs Blog, we have a brief introduction from each of our new recruits. They have each shared a little of their history and a few nuggets of other information. We have been pleased to welcome such a talented group of people to join our High Storrs staff this school year.

Lucy Clarke

I join you in High Storrs to teach Geography and History. Having worked in state schools, the private and charitable sectors I have been fortunate to gain a variety of teaching experiences. I look forward to sharing my passion for Geography and History with students at High Storrs School. My particular interests include Climate Change, Glaciation, Globalisation, WW1 and the Suffragettes. When I'm not teaching, you'll find me outdoors filling my life with green and blue. My favourite places are the Alps and the Mediterranean. I'm happiest on a paddleboard or a pair of skis. I love yoga, reading books and travelling with my family!

Tom Hughes

I am excited to be joining the High Storrs science team after completing my PGCE last year. Although originally from Sheffield, I spent most of the past ten years working at the University of Oxford where I completed a PhD in plant biology and then worked as a researcher in a lab. During those years teaching became an increasingly important and enjoyable part of my workload, and so the move into the classroom last year felt a natural next step. I’m looking forward to sharing my enthusiasm for plants with the students of High Storrs.

Oliver Matthews

Hello High Storrs community, I am joining the High Storrs team as a Physics teacher. I have recently moved to Sheffield from London having worked in schools across the capital for the last four years. I am very excited to share my passion for science with the students at High Storrs and look forward to promoting scientific curiosity in the young people here. Outside the Classroom I enjoy a range of mountain sports including climbing and cycling. I am looking forward to discovering the Peak District and all Sheffield has to offer. I am excited to start this new chapter at High Storrs and hope to make a positive contribution to the pupils, staff and whole community here.

Julie McGann

Hello. I am very lucky to work as a teacher of English and Learning Support this year. I completed my teacher training at the University of Derby (Chesterfield) and I have been supported magnificently by all the staff at HSS since starting my new role. I have just met my classes – they are the best! I love books, films and theatre. I enjoy sharing my passion for words because as well as my love for English I have a background of foreign languages. I am a keen netball player so I like to support the PE department with weekly netball training and matches. Before teaching, I worked as a TA and HLTA in the wonderful HSS Learning Support department. Whatever your role, working in education is extremely rewarding. Good luck for the coming year, everyone!

Beth Gilchrist

I’m the new Library Manager at High Storrs, with some very big shoes to fill! I’ve done a few different things before joining High Storrs. I studied for a BA and MA in Music at the University of York, after which I moved to South Korea. While there I taught English at an elementary school in Gyeongju, living there for 4 years before moving back to the UK in March 2022. I then spent a few months as a supply teacher in Leeds/Bradford, before moving to Sheffield last September to study for an MA in Librarianship. I volunteered as a library assistant at Broomhill Library during my studies and I have just finished my dissertation, which looked at classification systems in children’s libraries. I’m excited to apply everything I learnt during the course and from my time teaching, and I’m looking forward to getting to know students, staff, and their reading habits – I've already got a few names down! In my spare time I’m an avid reader (of course), with a goal of finishing 100 books by the end of the year (currently at 66!). I’m a frequent cinemagoer with a particular fondness for horror films. I’m also trying to maintain my (fairly basic) level of Korean!

Will Newton

Having recently arrived at High Storrs following an enjoyable three years teaching English at Silverdale, I’m hugely excited to take up the role of Key Stage Co-ordinator for English. My background is in the study of language and linguistics, with a master’s degree exploring teachers’ language in the classroom, and the socio-political factors influencing its usage. I know I’m joining a highly skilled, knowledgeable and supportive subject department in a high-achieving and thriving school, so I’m really keen to meet the students and make an impact in my new role. When I’m not teaching or reading, I’m out running up and down the hills of Sheffield or on the beautiful trails of the Peak District. As Wordsworth once said, “Let Nature be your teacher”, so the outdoors is where most of my learning happens! I’m delighted to be here and look forward to getting started.

Jennie Wood

I am doing a maternity cover for Mrs Bradley and I will be teaching Business and Computing and in the Year 13 pastoral team. I am returning to High Storrs after a year at Eckington, where I was teaching a wide range of subjects both specialist and outside of my specialism, which has been a steep learning curve. Returning to HSS has been like coming home, and been great to see everyone, both staff and students, again - I can’t believe how tall some of the students have got in just a year! I am based up on the business corridor and will also be coordinating the Bebras (computational thinking) competition again this year. A huge thank you to everyone who has been so lovely so far and helped me get re settled. I am really looking forward to this year.

Sophie Harrison

I will be joining the school as a Higher-Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) as part of the Learning Support team. Having graduated with a Postgraduate Certificate of Education from University of York in 2021, I have since spent time as an English and Media Studies Teacher in Lincolnshire before moving to Sheffield. In 2022 I started supply teaching and in October I was contracted for 2 weeks as a teaching assistant at High Storrs School and became so enthralled with the positive and supportive environment, that I remained on and now from September will be returning in a full-time position. Working in education, I have become passionate about supporting young people and helping them to achieve their goals. My role as a HLTA with vulnerable groups is a new role to the school and I'm excited to see how it develops and how it can help our students inside and outside of the classroom.

Clare Fenton

I am the new Art Teacher starting this September. After a 3 Year break from education and working in industry, it is great to return to teaching. I've really enjoyed meeting the all the students and staff at High Storrs. Everyone has been so helpful and supportive. I teach one day a week but feel I have settled in really quickly thanks to every one's support. I'm passionate about the Arts and believe that Art is for everyone. In my spare time I love checking out Gallery exhibitions, as well as being involved in Interior design projects. I'm also a massive fan of cinema and music. I look forward to the year ahead and sharing my enthusiasm for the Arts with the students I teach at High Storrs.

Liam Hall

I am the new DT teacher at HSS. This is my 7th year teaching and have moved over from Meadowhead Academy Trust. Before teaching I spent 10 years working within industry and therefore feel I bring great subject knowledge and experience. As a passionate designer myself I am constantly looking for innovations and areas to improve. Joining HSS I believe will give me the opportunity to develop even further but also look to be a great contributor in the forward journey of the school. I couldn't be more excited to be working in a supportive school, but also in my opinion the best DT department in the city.

Anna Ford

I’m the new Student Welfare Support Assistant. I have over ten years’ experience working in education and really enjoy the pastoral side of welfare and support. I’m already enjoying being part of, and caring for, the High Storrs family – students, staff and families - in this role.
