16-19 Bursary
The 16 to 19 Bursary Fund provides financial support to help Sixth Form students overcome specific financial barriers to participation so they can remain in education. There are two types of 16 to 19 bursaries:
- A Vulnerable Bursary for young people in one of the defined vulnerable groups
- A Discretionary Bursary which institutions award to meet individual needs, for example, help with the cost of transport, meals, books and equipment
The Bursary is intended to help students with the costs of overcoming any barriers you may have when attending learning. This might include: essential study materials including stationery; essential textbooks not provided by school; some course related activities and visits; travel costs for university visits. School will provide such materials, equipment and tickets.
Who is Eligible?
Vulnerable Student Bursary
You may be eligible for up to £1,200 per year if you fall into one of the following defined vulnerable groups:
- You’re in or you recently left local authority care
- You get Income Support or Universal Credit because you are financially supporting yourself
- You get Disability Living Allowance (DLA) in your name and either Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or Universal Credit
- You get Personal Independence Payment (PIP) in your own name and either ESA or Universal Credit
Discretionary Bursary
The Discretionary Bursary is awarded based on financial need and household income. Distribution of this funding is at the discretion of High Storrs School, in line with Department for Education funding rules. It will be awarded to young people facing the greatest financial barriers to participation. These applications are assessed individually, and funding is allocated based on actual need, not a fixed amount.
Eligibility for the Discretionary Bursary will be based upon a student’s financial need and is divided into two tiers:
A – Students who are in receipt of Free School Meals (FSM)
If you feel that you may be entitled to FSM but don’t have them yet, please ask your parent/ carer to apply for these via Sheffield City Council (https://www.sheffield.gov.uk/schools-childcare/school-meals).
B – Students whose household income is below £25,000
If you meet either or both of the above criteria you will be eligible for the 16-19 Bursary.
Bursary Application Process
Once you have started High Storrs Sixth Form in Year 12 you will receive information and guidance on how to apply for the 16-19 Bursary. If during your time in Sixth Form your circumstances change and you wish to apply for the Bursary, please contact the Sixth Form at sixthform@highstorrs-mlt.co.uk.
