Edexcel A Level Further Mathematics.

 

Optional modules: Further Statistics 1 and Further Mechanics 1

This course is equivalent to two A Levels.

Further Mathematics is an A Level to be taken alongside A Level Mathematics and two other courses.

 

Course Content

This course extends the content from the single Mathematics A Level, and introduces new, more conceptual areas of mathematics.

 

Core (algebra based) topics include:

  • Proof
  • Complex numbers
  • Matrices
  • Further algebra and functions
  • Further calculus
  • Further vectors
  • Polar coordinates
  • Hyperbolic functions
  • Differential equations.

 

In the route we have chosen to follow, the two additional units that students will study are as follows:

 

Further Statistics 1

  • Discrete probability distributions
  • Poisson & binomial distributions
  • Hypothesis testing
  • Central limit theorem
  • Chi squared tests
  • Probability generating functions

 

Further Mechanics 1

  • Momentum and impulse 
  • Work, energy and power
  • Elastic collisions in one dimension
  • Elastic strings and springs and energy
  • Elastic collisions in two dimensions

How Will I Be Assessed?

Papers 1 and 2- 25% each

  • Written paper
  • Pure Mathematics content

 

Paper 3 – 25%

  • Written paper
  • Further Statistics 1 content

 

Paper 4 – 25%

  • Written paper
  • Further Mechanics 1 content

Skills and Prospects

Further Mathematics is a difficult A Level, with the content being significantly more challenging than that of the regular Mathematics A Level. Further Mathematics goes beyond the content of other A levels, but would support Physics well.

Students who have a real passion for Mathematics and want to pursue this at university should consider Further Mathematics. The skills developed through the course are highly valued by all universities, particularly for courses including Physics, Engineering, Architecture and Mathematics.

High Storrs Sixth Form Entry Requirements

A minimum of five GCSEs at Grade 9 – 4. This must include:

• English Language Grade 5 OR

• English Literature Grade 5 AND English Language Grade 4

Plus

Grade 7 in Mathematics

X
