Welcome to our High Storrs Transition 2020 page

We are going to use this page to communicate with you regarding transition for Year 6 students who are preparing to join our Y7 community in September 2020.

One of the highlights of each academic year is having the opportunity to meet Y6 children and their parents as they anticipate joining our High Storrs community. One thing that often characterises those conversations is the mix of feelings that families feel as their son or daughter leaves primary education and begins secondary school. This year more than ever, those feelings are likely to be hard to navigate and accompanied by lots of questions.

However, despite the many challenges and uncertainty around us, this can still be a time of anticipation and hope. We can assure you that you and your child has chosen a wonderful school and that we are really looking forward to meeting them – whenever that might be. As with many things, there are some things that we can’t confirm right now, but that won’t stop us doing what we can to give you and your child a great start to life at High Storrs.

The first pack for all parents and carers of children starting with us in September is currently being given a few tweaks in light of the inevitable differences this year and then we’ll get it out to you as soon as we can. In the meantime, here’s a few things you can be doing at home.

1.    Talk and listen to your child about their feelings and questions about transition. Research has shown that for Y6 and Y7 children, the people who helped the most to prepare them for secondary school transition were their parents/guardians. As much as is possible, be available, give time to listen and don’t feel you need to have all the answers. Remind yourself and your child that there are 240 children in exactly the same boat. They aren’t alone!

2.    Keep an eye out for the Transition Pack, which will be coming through the post very soon. We’ll let you know here when it’s gone! We’ll post information here about this too.

3.    Follow High Storrs School Twitter feed to start to get a feeling for what’s happening

We have never done transition like this before, just like you. But be reassured, we have a brilliant team, from our office staff, to our Heads of House and Student Support Assistants, to the teachers themselves, who are determined to make this as positive and encouraging as possible. We can’t wait to meet you.
