At High Storrs School, we really value the input of our students. This blog entry has been written by the student council and details some of the things they did in term one of 24-25.
In this blog, we hope to give you more of an insight into how House Captains and the Sixth Form Head Team and how we help to support the school community. At High Storrs, for each of our four houses (Montgomery, Lyceum, Crucible and Merlin), 2 or 3 students are selected by their peers to be ‘House Captains’, representing their House in a number of ways. Similarly, the Sixth Form Head Team is also selected by a student vote. All of those elected make up the school council and are very proud to do so.
The Student Council works with ‘form reps’ (2 students from each of the forms). We aim to create a safe and welcoming environment to all students and to ensure that every individual has a chance to share their ideas. We hold frequent meetings with our form reps, where we discuss any suggestions and recommendations that have come up from students in their forms. We also encourage students to share their thoughts with us directly.
Every term we join a meeting of the school’s Senior Leadership Team to discuss ideas that have been frequently brought up in form time discussions. We discuss proposals and ideas with them and decide action points (some carried out by them and some carried out by us). Following this, we have prepare and share a whole school ‘Group Chat’. This is delivered by form tutors and outlines the actions taken.
Another key part of our work is fundraising. At the end of the previous school year, we sent out a poll to all forms to vote on charities that we could contribute towards in the 2024/25 school year. The two charities that our community decided on are ‘Cavendish Cancer Care’ and ‘UN Crises Relief’. Throughout this year, we have organised many fundraising events to generate as much money as possible towards the charities, this includes Staff v Students matches, bake sales and the Christmas raffle!
Overall, we hope to help all students feel represented and happy at High Storrs and to ensure students feel their voices are heard! We are extremely proud to be able to fulfil these roles in the school and hopefully inspire others to do so in future years.
