This next Headteacher’s blog comprises three letters written by new Y7s to their Y6 selves. I asked a group of students to write and share these letters as part of my presentation to families at the Y6 Open Evening. I always enjoy this activity, seeing our school through their eyes and enjoying all their excitement.
The students are nominated by the 4 Houses to speak with me at the Open Evening. The Heads of House and Student Support Assistants choose several students who have made a strong start and will represent the school well. This year was no exception – all the students who spoke were fabulous.
These 3 students were unable to speak at the Open Evening but were keen to write and share their letters anyway.

Dear Y6 me,
I have been at High Storrs for 4 weeks now but let me tell you this. It is great!
I know I had some worries like getting list in a huge school, but I have managed to find all my classes. Being in Y7 is busy but fun. Let me tell you some of the things we have been doing so far.
So first is PE. I am doing football and fitness, and it has been really fun. We even got to go on the treadmills which I bet you will be looking forward to. I am in Montgomery house (the little green dragon) which is the best! And our Head of house Mr Mallaband is awesome too!
I like High Storrs! We made a good decision!

Dear Y6 me,
I have now been at High Storrs School for 4 weeks. It is great and you’ll have so much fun.
I know we had some worries about going to secondary school like getting lost, not making any new friends or strict teachers.
But it has all worked out okay. I visited the school before (transition day and summer school) and did a treasure hunt to find the classrooms. You’ll make lots of friends so don’t worry about that. All the teachers are really nice, so no need to worry about that either!
Being in Y7 is exciting. Let me tell you about some of the things that I have learnt and experienced.
My favourite lesson is DT, so far we have made a key chain and researched architects.
I really enjoy meeting my friends in LF5 at break and lunch and going out onto the field.
In form time you chat about the school and also do a quiz once a week.
The school is nice and clean, and the food is amazing. I liked it so much that I spent my dinner money for the week on the first day!
I am really enjoying my time at High Storrs and I’m so glad that I get to call it my school.

Dear Y6 me,
I have now been at High Storrs school for 4 weeks and let me tell you its brilliant.
I know we had some worries about going to secondary school like not knowing anybody but it has all worked out okay because the teachers are helpful and kind.
Being in Y7 is fun and different to Primary school. Let me tell you about some of the things that I have learned and experienced.
- Lessons – my favourite lesson is Science because we did an experiment and used the Bunsen burners.
- Friendships – I have met some new people in class and form, but I still see my primary school friends at breaktimes or even swapping between lessons.
- House and Form – My house is Crucible. My form tutor is Mrs Gibbs and she is really nice.
- School and facilities – I like the dedicated Y7 place for lunchtimes and break. This is called LF5 and is next to the main hall on the lower floor. This place is for Y7s is a great area to chat to your friends and feel safe knowing we are all together.
I like High Storrs! We were right to choose this school. You all belong here.
