This next HT blog was written by our Directors of KS4 and KS5, Mr Highnett and Mrs Newell. It focuses, inevitably at this time of year, on external examinations.
As we begin term 3 here at High Storrs School, we have been so impressed by the hard work and effort of all our students this year, but, especially those students who are preparing for summer exams. Studying for GCSE and A Level examinations is a significant challenge, and students have covered a considerable volume of content through their programmes of study. This hasn’t been easy, but our students have handled things with maturity and understanding. These experiences – and the grades at the end of it – will stand students in great stead for all that is to come at post-16 and post-18.
As we are now only three school weeks away from the start of the summer exams, it is a good chance to remind students and families of the support in place. Between now and the start of exams, all of us at HSS are here to help and offer advice and support on how to best prepare for the period of exams to come. Our fantastic subject teams are working with students to guide them in revision and review and will continue to share advice and support on the best approaches to revision. Even at this stage it is not too late; students have time ahead to prepare and plan the weeks to come. As part of our ongoing support we have offered targeted support to individuals who need help with personalised revision planning; we teach and re–teach revision strategies; we provide revision materials such as flash cards and guides on exam success to all students; we have planned for study spaces and booster sessions when the exam period begins.
We want our students to see their summer exams as an opportunity to show off the wonderful things they know and celebrate their learning. The way we approach for the exams – in action and mindset – will have a great bearing on how things go. Please encourage your child to access all the support that’s available to them both now and during the exam season.
Exam regulations
With the beginning of summer exams imminent, it is worthwhile for students and families to remind themselves of the HSS exam regulations – details can be found here: Exams under the ‘HSS exam rules – Frequently asked questions’ document. We hope the resources found here will address any questions/concerns you may have, but please reach out if anything remains unclear.
Results Days
Finally, upon the completion of the summer examinations, Y11 and 13 students will embark on a well-earned summer break before we look forward to welcoming them back in August for Results Day. For Y13 students, this will be Thursday 14th August and for Y10/11 students this will Thursday 21st August. The Exams team will share more information about collecting results closer to the time.
The summer may begin a period of nervous anticipation for results and next steps, but we also hope it will include some time to relax and celebrate with friends and family.
As we head into term 3 and truly into the final countdown for our GCSE and A Level students, we want to wish them all every success. There is still so much to look forward to and still lots of time for students to access the support and guidance of their teachers and the wider staff here at High Storrs. Wishing every one of our students all the very best for the summer examinations – do well.
