The course involves the study of a wide range of literature from the Roman era. This includes reading The Aeneid by Virgil, The History of Rome by Livy, Caesar’s Conquest of Britain & Gaul as well as works by Cicero, Tacitus, Ovid and Juvenal. The focus will be on Roman mythology, religion, everyday life, the senate and the army. You will develop your Latin translation skills whilst gaining an in depth knowledge of Roman history and culture.

Assessment

Paper 1 - 33% 

  • Written language paper.
  • Unseen translation of prose and verse texts, plus scansion of two lines of verse.

Paper 2 - 17% 

  • Written language paper.
  • Unseen comprehension or composition.

Paper 3 – 25%

  • Written literature paper – prose.
  • Questions and essays on prose literature selection.

Paper 4 – 25% 

  • Written literature paper – verse.
  • Questions and essays on verse literature selection.

Students will have the chance to study a unique range of texts, covering a range of disciplines such as History, Philosophy, Literature, Religion and Politics. Students will acquire the confidence to approach language sensitively and critically, thanks to the focus on analytical and evaluative skills.

Studying Latin can lead to a university degree in many subjects including Classics, History, Law, Medicine, Veterinary Science and Botanical Sciences as well as many other Humanities subjects. Latin offers an excellent talking point in university and job interviews.  

Students gaining a qualification in Latin will have the knowledge and ability to critically analyse information and progress to higher education and employment in a variety of areas including, Law, Medicine, Foreign Languages and Humanities. 

High Storrs Sixth Form Entry Requirements

A minimum of five GCSEs at Grade 9 - 4. This MUST include at least a Grade 4 in English Language and Mathematics.
