Our Sixth Form is “outstanding”.  That’s not just our opinion – it’s the official judgement from Ofsted (November 2013).  High Storrs is committed to providing the highest standard of education and a positive and exciting learning environment for all students.

In September 2011 we completed our BSF rebuilding and refurbishment programme. This has now given our students a learning environment which is second to none, including new sports facilities, drama and dance studios, and new sixth form areas, as well as a new Learning Resource Centre, among others.

The Sixth Form has a uniquely supportive ethos.  Students are stretched and challenged, but in a positive and caring way, catering for individual needs and abilities.  We believe that every student can and should experience success.  We always involve parents if concerns arise or special praise is deserved.

But there is much more to Sixth Form life than academic achievement.  Students enjoy all the opportunities of a well-resourced school, with a full package of extra-curricular activities.

We help prepare students for higher education, employment or further training, so they can play a full and responsible role in the community.  Our committed and talented staff do all that we can to develop high aspirations.

We work closely with parents – we look forward to a long and productive partnership.

A different style of learning

The approach to learning is very different in the Sixth Form.  You have made a positive choice to continue your studies post-16, and as a result you are more self-motivated, studying subjects in which you have a real interest.

To ensure a smooth transition into the Sixth Form, students discuss their options with staff before experiencing a two-day preliminary “taster” course in June.  Throughout your time at High Storrs you are encouraged to seek the help of form tutors and Sixth Form staff, particularly in the early weeks when things can seem very different and new.  We want you to succeed and reach your potential – we give you all the support and help for you to achieve this.

We offer you the opportunity to learn in a friendly, helpful atmosphere, supported by qualified and experienced teachers who understand the demands of post-16 study.  We also have a dedicated and supportive Sixth Form team who support and develop your talents and aspirations.  Around 70 per cent of our own Year 11 students stay on in the Sixth Form and we welcome the remainder from schools from all over Sheffield and beyond – they add a much valued new dimension.

Dedicated Sixth Form area

High Storrs Sixth Formers have access to a suite of dedicated rooms including a study room with IT access, meeting room and common room. The common room is furnished with comfortable seating and cafe style tables. Since September we have benefited from a new coffee bar, that also sells hot and cold sandwiches, fruit, cold drinks, and cakes. The menu is agreed with the head boy and girl team with regular consultation to respond to students’ requests.

We have recently adopted a Cashless Catering system for the purchase of food items. Students register their fingerprint and can top this up at any one of the points around school (there is a dedicated one in the common room for sixth form use). When purchasing food items they then just need to use the fingerprint reader at the till points. Further information about this system can be found here, including the form you’ll need to fill in and submit to opt in to the catering system.
