Our Sixth Form is “outstanding”. That’s not just our opinion – it’s the official judgement from Ofsted. High Storrs is committed to providing the highest standard of education and a positive and exciting learning environment for all students.

From September 2010 we will have newly built sixth form study and social facilities within the block that is currently under construction. Hopefully you will have a chance to view the architects’ images for the entire building and the sixth form spaces.

The Sixth Form has a uniquely supportive ethos. Students are stretched and challenged, but in a positive and caring way, catering for individual needs and abilities. We believe that every student can and should experience success. We always involve parents if concerns arise or special praise is deserved.

But there is much more to Sixth Form life than academic achievement. Students enjoy all the opportunities of a well-resourced school, with a full package of extra-curricular activities.

We help prepare students for higher education, employment or further training, so they can play a full and responsible role in the community. Our committed and talented staff do all that we can to develop high aspirations.

We work closely with parents – we look forward to a long and productive partnership.

    A different style of learning

The approach to learning is very different in the Sixth Form. You have made a positive choice to continue your studies post-16, and as a result you are more self-motivated, studying subjects in which you have a real interest.

To ensure a smooth transition into the Sixth Form, students discuss their options with staff before experiencing a two-day preliminary “taster” course in June. And throughout your time at High Storrs you are encouraged to seek the help of form tutors and Sixth Form staff, particularly in the early weeks when things can seem very different and new. We want you to succeed and reach your potential – we give you all the support and help for you to achieve this.

We offer you the opportunity to learn in a friendly, helpful atmosphere, supported by qualified and experienced teachers who understand the demands of post-16 study. We also have a dedicated and supportive Sixth Form team who support and develop your talents and aspirations. Around 75 per cent of our own Year 11 students stay on in the Sixth Form and we welcome the remainder from schools from all over Sheffield and beyond – they add a much valued new dimension.

    ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
There are courses available for students whatever their academic backgrounds, but we expect our post-16 students to show a genuine desire to continue in education.

In order to be successful on a course of study which involves AS subjects we would normally expect students to have passed a minimum of five GCSEs at Grade C or above, and to have sound background for their chosen course. Check individual subject requirements carefully.

For the level two vocational courses, students should have at least 4 grade Ds at GCSE in relevant subjects.
Achievement at GCSE does give some indication of AS/A2 level potential, though a high grade at GCSE does not guarantee similar success at AS/A2 level. A Grade A, B or C at GCSE is desirable before embarking on an AS/A2 level course in that subject and it is necessary in Mathematics to obtain a grade B or above at Higher Level GCSE. A grade B or above in Y11 GCSE Science (or the named Science subject) is required for students to take ‘AS’ levels in Physics, Chemistry or Biology. Students wishing to study ‘AS’ Psychology must obtain grade C in GCSE Maths and English.
Good GCSE grades in Mathematics and English are important for progression into many further courses and careers and if you have a GCSE grade D or E you would be well advised to try to upgrade the subject during the sixth form. Please note that we do not offer a complete GCSE retake programme.
    EXAMINATION COURSES OFFERED
The following courses are currently available and we expect to be able to offer comparable choices for 2009.

If we cannot meet your choices there are often ways around the problem. We operate a common Post-16 timetable with Silverdale and King Ecgbert schools.
